Stronger Together: How the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Peer Support Initiative is Transforming Recovery Celebrating the Success of the Métis Nation within Alberta’s Connections in Recovery
Edmonton, AB – January 20, 2025 – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation Within Alberta is proud to celebrate the ongoing success of its Substance Use Peer Support Group, Connections in Recovery, a vital initiative fostering connection, healing, and community resilience. This program stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of Métis people coming together to support one another through shared challenges and triumphs.
At the heart of this initiative is a safe and welcoming space where Métis Citizens and community members can connect, share their experiences, and find strength in their journey toward wellness. Guided by the principles of mutual respect, cultural grounding, and lived experience, the peer support group empowers participants to navigate the complexities of substance use while embracing Métis values of kinship, self-determination, and resilience.
“This group isn’t just about addressing substance use—it’s about creating a space where people feel valued, supported, and connected to their community,” said President Sandmaier. “We honor each participant’s unique journey and provide tools and guidance rooted in Métis culture and shared understanding.”
The program offers both in-person gatherings and online participation to ensure accessibility for all. Held every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Métis Veteran’s Building (12308 – 111 Avenue in Edmonton), Connections in Recovery creates a supportive environment for individuals, friends, and families affected by addiction. The first and third Tuesdays of each month feature special sharing circles with guest speakers who bring unique perspectives and lived experience. No registration is required—participants can join in person or online via Zoom.
Key highlights of the program include:
- A Safe and Supportive Environment: A non-judgmental space for open dialogue and mutual encouragement.
- Culturally Grounded Practices: Integration of Métis traditions and teachings to foster healing and resilience.
- Peer Support Leadership: Facilitators who bring lived experience and genuine understanding to their roles.
- Accessibility: Weekly in-person gatherings with an online participation option to ensure everyone can connect.
- Special Sharing Circles: Guest speakers and cultural teachings on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
“This initiative proves that cultural grounding and leading with compassion can drive meaningful change, “said Kaila Mitchell, Secretary of Mental Health and Addictions. “We are building a community-informed model that fosters recovery and reconnection, while providing a safe space to strengthen resilience and explore the root causes of substance use.”
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation Within Alberta invites anyone seeking support for substance use, or those who simply wish to connect, to join this community-driven initiative. Together, we celebrate our successes, honor our journeys, and ensure that every Métis citizen knows they are not alone.
