Empowering Cancer Care Providers: Otipemisiwak Métis Government Launches Métis Cancer Care Course

Edmonton, AB – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta is proud to announce the launch of the Métis Cancer Care Course, an innovative e-learning program designed to support cancer care providers in Alberta and across Canada. This course offers vital insights into the distinct culture, history, and health experiences of Métis people, equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and strategies needed to provide culturally safe and responsive cancer care.

This course was developed in response to consistent feedback from Métis Citizens, who have expressed through ongoing engagement that the healthcare system lacks a comprehensive understanding of their identity, culture, history, and distinct health experiences. This gap in understanding has often left Métis individuals feeling underserved and unsupported, particularly within cancer care. The Métis Cancer Care Course aims to bridge this gap by providing healthcare providers with essential knowledge and tools to deliver culturally safe and responsive care tailored to the unique needs of Métis communities.

“This course bridges the gap between healthcare providers and Métis communities by fostering understanding, empathy, and cultural safety,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “Through education, we can ensure that Métis Citizens receive care that respects their unique identity and experiences.”

The Métis Cancer Care Course provides an overview of who Métis people are, exploring their distinct culture, history, and approaches to health and well-being. It also addresses the unique cancer care experiences and health challenges faced by Métis people, offering practical tools to enhance culturally safe communication and care delivery.

Course Highlights:

• Understanding Métis Culture and Identity: Explore the rich heritage and unique identity of Métis people.
• Historical and Intergenerational Trauma: Learn about the lasting impacts of historical injustices and the social determinants of health.
• Culturally Safe Communication: Gain strategies for respectful and effective communication with Métis clients.
• Role of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government: Understand the Métis Nation’s structure and its role in supporting health and wellness.
• Distinct Health Status: Recognize the unique health profile of Métis Albertans compared to other Indigenous groups.

The course was initially developed for cancer care partners to share with their staff, ensuring that providers across the system are equipped to meet the needs of Métis patients. Recognizing the broader value of this resource, the MNA has also made the course publicly available to foster a deeper understanding among all healthcare professionals and community members.

Healthcare providers across Canada can access this free e-learning course through the SE Health First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Program’s e-learning platform, @YourSide Colleague, alongside more than 20 additional culturally focused courses.

“This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing healthcare inequities for Métis communities,” said Bobbi Paul-Alook, Secretary of Health and Seniors. “By equipping cancer care providers with this knowledge, we’re fostering trust and improving outcomes for Métis patients and their families.”

Funding for this course was provided by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, demonstrating a shared commitment to community led initiatives that support culturally responsive cancer care for Métis Citizens.
