Notice Description

Bow, Elbow, Highwood, and Sheep River Hydrology Assessment

Project Background – An assessment of the hydrology for the Bow, Elbow, Sheep, and Highwood Rivers will be completed in support of the provincial Flood Hazard Identification Program. All deliverables will enhance public safety and support the identification of flood hazards. This will assist in reducing potential future flood damages, disaster assistance costs to the federal,

First Nations, provincial and local governments, and will help in the mitigation of flood impacts.

Project Objectives – This project will include basin-wide hydrologic assessment and flood frequency analyses for multiple locations along each river and select major tributaries, including at hydrometric gauge locations, upstream and downstream of major tributary confluences and at select communities. The project deliverables will support a variety of other projects, objectives and stakeholder needs, including the separate Upper Bow River, Bow and Elbow River, Highwood, River, and Sheep River Hazard Identification Projects.

This project aligns with Goal 1 of the GoA Strategic Plan, Honour Alberta’s Communities, supporting the provision of environmental emergency intervention to increase public safety. It also supports Priority Initiative 1.1 under Goal 1, Healthy environment and ecosystems, of the Environment and Parks Business Plan assisting in the completion of Land-use Framework regional plans, and Priority Initiative 4.1 supporting warning systems against future events (such as flooding) under Goal 4, Protected public and environment.

Key Stakeholders – The key stakeholders for this project are the Government of Alberta and local authorities including the Town of Canmore, Town of Cochrane, Hamlet of Exshaw, Kananaskis

Improvement District, Hamlet of Lac des Arcs, M.D. of Bighorn, Rocky View County, Stoney First Nation, City of Calgary, Hamlet of Bragg Creek, Hamlet of Priddis, M.D. of Foothills, Rocky View

County, Siksika and Tsuu T’ina First Nations, Town of High River, Village of Longview, M.D. of Foothills, Town of Black Diamond, Millarville, Town of Okotoks, Town of Turner Valley, County of Vulcan, and M.D. of Willow Creek.
