Wood Buffalo’s Year of Sport continues next week as professional golf returns to Fort McMurray with the Syncrude Boreal Open presented by AECON.

For a fifth straight year, more than 150 of golf’s best up-and-coming stars will tee off at the Fort McMurray Golf Club as the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada makes its third stop of the 2015 season.

“Having celebrated several major sporting events already this year, Syncrude is extremely excited to bring the Boreal Open back to Fort McMurray,” says Syncrude CEO Mark Ward. “This tournament provides a tremendous opportunity for our community to showcase its warmth and spirit, while welcoming golfers and visitors alike to our beautiful region.”

The Boreal Open is one of several high-profile sporting events held in the region this year, a line-up that includes the Syncrude Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling event, the Northern Kickoff CFL game and the Western Canada Summer Games.

The 2015 Syncrude Boreal Open starts on Thursday, June 25, and concludes Sunday afternoon, when the winner will be presented a cheque for $31,500. However, activities will begin on Monday, June 22, with a qualifying round, followed by the pro-am, clinics and more.

“I encourage the entire community to take advantage of the free shuttle service and enjoy some great golf played here in Fort McMurray. As well, I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to all of the supporters, volunteers, caddies and host families who make this event so successful,” adds Mark.
