Working together to fight illicit fentanyl – CTV
August 12, 2015
The Calgary Police, Alberta Health Services and national law enforcement agencies are coming together to raise awareness about fentanyl in Alberta.
A joint news conference will be held Thursday to talk about the drug and what plans are in the works to help combat it. Calgary Police will also be releasing details about a recent arrest in the city which was made after a joint investigation.
The powerful opioid has been linked to a spike in deaths across Canada and officials say there’s more out there and it’s becoming more accessible.
The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse released a bulletin saying fentanyl was involved in the deaths of at least 655 people across Canada between 2009 and 2014. Fentanyl related deaths in Alberta are also rising with 29 in 2012 to 120 in 2014.
