This past Tuesday, 100 members of the University community came together to network and learn about the University’s work with Indigenous peoples. 38 people presented on their research, teaching and support of Indigenous students. The Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Calls to Action were front of mind, as was the President’s recent announcement about plans for an Indigenous House of Learning on campus.

Over the past few months we have been gathering information on the body of work on Indigenous Engagement initiatives at the University. It is clear that well before the TRC’s Calls to Action, the University was engaged in the areas identified by the TRC as being essential to reconciliation. For example, all 2,800 students in the Faculty of Education take Edu 211 Aboriginal Education and Contexts for Professional and Personal Engagement, which responds to the TRC Call to Action number 63 which advocates building capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect. There are a number of other initiatives underway to ensure more students, staff, and faculty at the U of A have the opportunity to learn about FNMI peoples and their history in Canada.
