The National Bank is predicting the federal government could run 90-billion dollars in deficits over the Liberals’ four-year mandate.

That’s based on two factors — the weakened economy and Liberal promises of billions in fiscal stimulus measures.

Bank economist Warren Lovely says if the forecast is correct, Ottawa could lose 50-billion dollars in revenue over the next four years. (12)

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has told the Federation of Canadian Municipalities that next month’s first ministers’ meeting will build the foundation of a pan-Canadian climate plan.

Murray says there’s a great deal of optimism among the country’s environment ministers.

He thinks there will be major progress over the next few years, saying the ministers are finding solutions to things like pipelines that work for everybody, including Alberta. (12)

It’s not clear what role Canada might play in a new multi-national NATO force.

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says the force will beef up the defences of Poland and other frontline alliance members that are most at risk from Russia.

The new unit will rotate in and out of Eastern European member states rather than being based there. (12)

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is expected to drop out of the 2016 race for the White House after finishing sixth in the New Hampshire primary.

Christie had banked his presidential prospects on a strong finish in the early-voting state, but finished behind most of his Republican rivals yesterday.

It was the final blow for a candidate who spent more than 70 days campaigning in New Hampshire. (12)

(Oil-Aboriginal-Regulator)

The Indian Resource Council is blaming the Harper government for a go-slow approach in reforming an agency that looks after oil and gas on reserve lands.

Legislation to modernize Indian Oil and Gas Canada passed in 2009 but still hasn’t taken effect.

Earlier this week, two bands from Alberta and Saskatchewan filed a three-billion-dollar lawsuit against the federal government because of the foot-dragging, and other bands are expected to join in. (12)

Size really does matter.

Hawaii’s big wave surf competition has been called off once again this year because the waves are too small.

The last time the waves were actually reaching the strict 12-metre high minimum was six years ago. (12)
