Three to See Friday: Indigenous tattoo art, competitive Kyle Beal and a virtual Queen on screen – Edmonton Journal

Body Language: Reawakening Cultural Tattooing of the Northwest: A seriously exciting-looking show, the work of five Indigenous tattoo artists is up on the walls at St. Albert’s Musée Héritage Museum, straight from the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art.

The gallery’s curator Joanne White explains, “With the current popularity of tattooing, our staff members saw this exhibition as an opportunity to learn about, understand and remember the significance and origins of tattooing traditions in Canada and around the world.”

Since ancient times, both men and women of the Northwest Coast have marked their clan crests and symbols of personal identity onto their skin. After 1885, when the practices of tattooing and potlatches were banned, the display of personal crest designs was transferred to clothing and jewelry.
