The Federal Court Rules in Favour of Current Chief of Kehewin, Brenda Joly

Bonnyville, Alberta, July 27, 2016…the Kehewin Cree Nation is now in a solid position to move forward with the Federal Court of Appeal’s ruling that states that the current Chief, Brenda Joly will stay as the Chief of the Cree Nation. A long legal battle has ensued within the Nation and the current Chief & Council are moving forward.

“We want our membership along with the Governments, First Nations, industry and the general public to know that Kehewin has a Chief. We are open for business and look forward to changing the narrative for the betterment of our Cree Nation members and future generations,” said Chief Brenda Joly.

This decision stays the judgement of the Federal Court decision requiring a new election for the position of Chief pending the Appeal set for October of this year. This decision confirms that Brenda Joly is presently the Chief of the Kehewin Cree Nation.

Three quarters of the Nation voted in the current Chief and Council. The Nation has a population of approximately 1300 people on reserve and 900 people off reserve. The total population is 2200 on the Cree Nation, which is located in Treaty No.6.
