JUSTIN TRUDEAU TO BE SWORN IN AS CANADA’S 23RD PRIME MINISTER

Justin Trudeau will become Canada’s 23rd prime minister, and will introduce his cabinet to the country. And then it will be right to work with a cabinet meeting this afternoon. The new Liberal team is expected to take immediate action on reinstating the long-form census, signalling the start of a new, and starkly different era from that of the Stephen Harper decade.

NEW, SMALLER NDP CAUCUS HAVING FIRST MEET AND GREET

New Democrat MPs will meet in Ottawa today for the first time since the party’s crushing election defeat. While Justin Trudeau is being sworn in as prime minister and introducing his cabinet team, former Opposition leader Tom Mulcair will rally his remaining troops and announce the NDP’s front bench in the new Parliament.

INDIAN CONGLOMERATE GETS FINANCIAL BACKING FROM OTTAWA

Export Development Canada will provide Tata companies with up to US$500 million a year to support the Indian corporation’s expansion in Canada. The money will underwrite loans primarily to help small- to medium-sized companies within Tata’s global network. Tata has several Canadian divisions in the beverage, steel, consulting, chemicals, communications, technologies and interactive sectors.

‘HIGH-RISK’ DESIGNATION CASE BACK IN B.C. COURT

Legal arguments will continue in B.C. today as the province tries to have a “high-risk” designation applied retrospectively to a mentally ill man who killed his three children. Allan Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for stabbing his 10-year-old daughter and smothering his eight and five-year-old sons in 2008.
