CALGARY – Foundations, walls and roofs are going up at Calgary Board of Education school construction sites. Parents are starting to see a place of learning for their children that will be closer to home.

Nine new schools along with the modernization of Jack James High School and the Aboriginal Learning Centre at Harold W. Riley School are expected to open their doors to students next September. The nine new schools will add 7,200 student spaces that will support the CBE’s growing student population.

Along with the construction work that is ongoing, an incredible amount of preparation is taking place in order to have these schools open on time and with the resources they need.

“Planning to open this many schools at one time is an enormous and unprecedented undertaking for the CBE. Staff from all service units are working on everything from ordering furniture and learning resources to hiring staff and communicating with parents,” says Frank Coppinger, superintendent Facilities and Environmental Services.

Six of the new schools expected to open in September are elementary schools. Parents can find information on registering for kindergarten at one of the new schools on the CBE website at cbe.ab.ca/registration. Kindergarten registration opens for all schools on Jan. 11, 2016.

Details on walk zones and school designations will be available to parents before the winter break. The public can find updates on all of the CBE’s capital projects, including construction progress and other important information at cbe.ab.ca/schools.

You can see the progress we’ve made on the new schools by watching our Building for Student Success video.

Superintendent Frank Coppinger will be available for media interviews from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. today. Please call Media Relations at 403-819-2317 to book an interview time.
