When she was a kid, Crystal Shawanda would sit at the top of the stairs and listen as her brother played Muddy Waters and BB King albums, wondering if she could ever sing like that.
Years later, when she had hit her stride as an award-winning country music singer, she continued to wonder. Even when she was touring with acts such as Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley, the Ontario-born Shawanda still had an ear cocked to the blues, at times even channelling the spirit of Janis Joplin. Is it really all that surprising that she eventually felt the need to make a musical defection?
