Premier Notley statement on human rights tribunal ruling
Premier Rachel Notley released the following statement on the ruling from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal on child welfare services for First Nations children on reserves.
“Today’s Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling is a positive step towards correcting an injustice for children and families living on reserves across Canada.
“We applaud the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and the Assembly of First Nations for their work in pressing this issue. I am also pleased to see the federal government acknowledge and accept the need to provide greater support for First Nation children and families living on reserve, and I am hopeful we will see the discriminatory funding gap between federal and provincial services end.
“All children, regardless of race, deserve access to supportive environments that can help them flourish. We know there is more work ahead, and look forward to continuing the conversation with Indigenous leadership and our federal counterparts to ensure that all children grow up with access to the supports and services they need.
“Our government is committed to improving the quality of life for Indigenous children, youth, and families.”
