Otipemisiwak Métis Government Moves Forward on Métis Health Initiatives with Productive Trilateral Meeting with Federal and Provincial Health Ministers

On January 9, 2025, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government leadership held a successful trilateral meeting with Federal Health Minister Mark Holland and Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange to discuss critical healthcare priorities for Métis Citizens.

The discussion highlighted the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s health achievements, including our successful dental program, offering free dental clinics to Métis Citizens across Alberta and health navigation services. Key topics included the need for sustainable funding, healthcare access for Métis in rural and remote areas in Alberta, seniors care, and health data sovereignty.

During the meeting President Sandmaier, Bobbi Paul-Alook, Secretary of Health and Seniors, and Kaila Mitchell, Secretary of Mental Health and Addictions, emphasized barriers in mental health and addictions services, the importance of addressing systemic racism in healthcare, and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s ability to deliver world class, innovative, community-led, and self-determined solutions to our Citizens.

Both ministers expressed strong support for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s work and recognized the need for long-term, sustainable solutions to address these pressing health concerns. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government extends its gratitude to the ministers for their time and commitment to ongoing collaboration through future trilateral meetings.

This meeting represents a step forward in strengthening our government-to-government relationship with Canada and Alberta and ensuring that Métis Citizens in Alberta receive the healthcare they deserve.
