For years, decades even, we approached Indigenous relations like we would any stakeholder engagement. And yes, we’ve done some great things with our neighbouring communities. But did we actually make a difference in their lives? Did we contribute to the journey of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada? The short answer is no.
We were passionate; we were committed. But our strategy was misguided. And that’s not to say that we have it all right now and there’s nothing more to learn.
About a year ago we took a step back and listened. Instead of deciding what these communities needed and how we could support them, we met with our neighbours. We learned about their communities and their needs, and we formed a very different strategy to support them — one we’re proud of today.
Capital Power doesn’t approach Indigenous relations the same way anymore. In fact, we don’t even call it Indigenous relations. We call it business.
