CALGARY — Alberta’s justice minister says she would like to see changes made next year that would reduce the number of aboriginal children in care in the province.
Kathleen Ganley says consultations are already underway with First Nations about the disproportionate number of aboriginal children in government care.
She says the number is higher now than when the last residential schools in Alberta were shut down in the province decades ago.
As of June of this year there were more than 6,900 children in care in Alberta — 69 per cent of those were from First Nation communities.
