If the bear symbolizes Muskoseepi Park, then Maskwôtêh Park is its heart.
After three years of planning and construction, the new park was officially unveiled on Thursday by city officials and members of the Aboriginal community.
“I think there was something that we can always do better and that’s to recognize the people that were here first – the people who were here before there was a municipality,” said Mayor Bill Given, who was choked up during the opening ceremony.
The name Maskwôtêh means “bear heart” and it was chosen during a pipe ceremony lead by elder Leonard Cardinal, who sang a drum song during the opening.
