National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022
June 21, 2022
One of the most precious aspects of my role as Lieutenant Governor is the opportunity to meet with, and learn from, Indigenous people and their communities. I greatly value every opportunity to listen and I am deeply committed to walking alongside Indigenous people along the path toward Truth and Reconciliation. While there are still far too many people among us who are struggling with the effects of generational trauma, and who need our support and understanding, there are also inspiring examples of healing taking place.
I have had the honour of meeting Indigenous people of all ages who are leading the way forward with innovation, resilience and hope. National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time for everyone to reaffirm the responsibility that we hold as Treaty People to join in this essential work. We can each play a meaningful role in caring for this land that we share, and in charting a way forward that brings care, compassion and healing for all.
As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, I offer my heartfelt thanks to members of the Indigenous community who have graciously shared wisdom, hospitality and friendship with me. I hope that we can continue strengthening the bonds of trust and understanding in the days ahead.
Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., LLD (hon). Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
