Indigenous culture, traditions and teachings will be highlighted throughout June as we celebrate National Indigenous History Month (NIHM). The month-long series of events will reflect the stories, achievements and diversity of Indigenous Peoples across Wood Buffalo.

June 1: Kiyām Community Park -Enjoy traditional teachings and a Bannock lunch

If you’ve ever wanted to participate in Dene Hand Games or understand the Tipi teachings, drop by the community gathering at Kiyām Community Park. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and begins with an opening prayer from Elder Robert Cree and a drumming song from knowledge keeper Randy Martin. A light bannock lunch will be provided.

“June is an important month to recognize, respect and learn Indigenous history as a shared history,” said Dennis Fraser, Director of Indigenous and Rural Relations. “I’m thrilled we are able to begin in a good way, by coming together for a gathering, listening, learning and sharing food.”

Activities will take place all month long-watch for details!

NIHM activities will be taking place throughout June as we work together to build and strengthen relationships in Wood Buffalo. The Wood Buffalo Regional Library will be hosting story time sessions featuring Indigenous writers each Saturday. In partnership with Athabasca Tribal Council and other community partners, we will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. The schedule of events will be available at and on our social media channels.
