Canada’s new national chief is ready to do business – differently

The message was clear. When it comes to resource development on First Nations land, the era of business as usual was over. That was the promise of Perry Bellegarde when he rode a wave of votes into the highest office of Canadian aboriginal politics. Five months later, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations can point to just about anywhere on a map of proposed Canadian energy projects to show evidence of his policy in action. What some see as angry, obstructionist tactics from Canada’s indigenous communities – particularly around pipelines in British Columbia – Bellegarde sees as a long-excluded population fighting its way into the national economy. But however you see it, it’s impossible to look away any longer.
