Meeting with Treaty Six First Nation Leadership sets course for renewed relationship
Premier Rachel Notley, Grand Chief Tony Alexis and several Chiefs from Treaty Six First Nations took steps to build a new relationship today.
Today, the Premier of Alberta and the Chiefs of Treaty Six met to discuss working together in a new spirit of respect and reconciliation.
“We are committed to establishing a more respectful and constructive relationship between Alberta First Nations and the province. Sitting down on a government-to-government basis with Treaty Six leadership allowed for an open discussion about how we can work together to improve opportunities for all Alberta families and communities.”
Rachel Notley, Premier of Alberta
“I look for a commitment from you and your government on working together on developing a process where our governments and your government may have consensus on what we will do together for the benefit of all for no truer statement can be made than ‘when our Indigenous peoples prosper — all will prosper’.”
Tony Alexis, Grand Chief of Treaty Six
“Over the summer I had the opportunity to visit several Treaty Six communities. I’ve gained a much better understanding of what matters to local families and leaders. Today’s meeting was important to help us understand how we can move forward together in building a stronger, more collaborative relationship that will create new opportunities.”
Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Aboriginal Relations
