CALGARY – An opening ceremony at the Olympic Plaza sets the official start of the Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary (AAWC) on Monday.
The AAWC is designed to raise cultural awareness within the city and to celebrate contemporary achievements of indigenous people in Canada. Started over 20 years ago, the AAWC was started by members of different Aboriginal serving agencies, who began organizing events and celebrations for the week before June 21 – National Aboriginal Day.
“The Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary theme for 2015 is a reflection of the pride our First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities take in their rich heritages, traditions, and cultures,” says a statement on the group’s website.
The events organized by the AAWC aim to promote pride, understanding and awareness of Aboriginal cultures, traditions, contributions and achievements to Canadian history, business, agriculture, environment, and the arts, according to its website. They are funded through sponsorships and grants. Thirteen local and national agencies are main supporters for the AAWC.
