Keyano expands HEO training to rural communities – Fort McMurray Today

Despite recent talks of a possible shift towards automation in the oilsands, Keyano College and believes there are still opportunities for heavy hauler jobs, and is partnering with Syncrude and the federal government to expand training in rural communities.

On Thursday afternoon, Michelle Rempel, the minister for western economic diversification, announced $1.5 million in funding to assist Keyano’s Heavy Equipment Operator program reach rural areas. A major part of that outreach is the use of a simulator.

The mobile simulator can train several students at once and is programmed to teach students how to drive wheel loaders, articulated trucks, motor graders, large-tracked dozers, off-highway trucks and hydraulic excavators. The simulator itself can be towed or loaded onto barges to reach isolated areas.

The simulator will tour Wood Buffalo’s rural hamlets, such as Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan, to train aboriginals. The federal government estimates 145 aboriginals will complete training on the simulator during the next four years.
