Indigenous Graduate Students’ Award: application deadline February 15

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the availability of its newest award supporting graduate students, at both the Doctoral and Master’s-levels.

The Indigenous Graduate Award is valued at a minimum of $7,500 (each semester, with a maximum award of $15,000 annually).

Sponsored by the Government of Alberta, the award is intended to encourage indigenous Albertans (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) to pursue and complete graduate studies in Alberta.

Eligibility

AU students must be or enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program for the 2015-16 academic year. Students must have been actively registered in courses applicable to their program for September 2015 and January 2016.

To receive this award, you must also meet all of these eligibility criteria:

  • Be a Status Indian/First Nations, Non-Status Indian/First Nations, Métis or Inuit
  • Provide copies of proof of indigenous ancestry directly to your school
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or have protected person status under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 
  • Be a resident of Alberta
  • Be enrolled in at least 60 per cent of a full course load (40 per cent of a full course load if you are a student with a permanent disability)
  • Be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program approved by the Minister of Advanced Education

Recipients will be accepted based on:

  • The minimum eligibility criteria for the Indigenous Graduate Award
  • Essay response on a topic such as leadership, community engagement, volunteerism, career plans upon graduation etc.
  • Program GPA
