Groundbreaking study makes first links between oilsands and cancer in Fort Chipewyan – Northern Journal

For over a decade, residents of Fort Chipewyan have been crying out for something to be done about what they believe to be the clear connection between the rise of rare cancers in their tiny northern Alberta community and the massive oil operations upstream.
Though many scientific studies have concluded with certainty that pollution from the oilsands industry north of Fort McMurray is making its way through the air and water well beyond what was initially claimed, the extent to which that contamination has become an issue of human health has never been strongly drawn.
Or at least that was the case until last year, when researchers from the University of Manitoba working in conjunction with local First Nations published the first study of its kind drawing conclusive links between the occurrence of cancer in Fort Chipewyan and the oilsands industry.
