Premier Danielle Smith has issued mandate letters that direct ministers to take action to unleash the potential of key industries and build prosperity for all Albertans.

Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson, and Minister of Indigenous Relations Rajan Sawhney have been tasked with working with key partners, including Indigenous partners, to unleash the full potential of key industries such as energy and agriculture to build prosperity for all communities in Alberta.

“Alberta succeeds when our industries succeed. By unleashing the potential of energy, agriculture and other sectors, we are opening new doors of opportunity for Albertans. With these mandates, we are focused on growth, environmental stewardship and Indigenous partnership to deliver prosperity for every community.”

Danielle Smith, Premier

Environment and Protected Areas

The Premier tasks Minister Schulz with:

  • Relentlessly defending Alberta against federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction, including any federal regulation of industrial emissions, intra-provincial projects, electricity or plastics, and building alliances with other provinces.
  • Amending the Water Act to increase water availability, improve access to water licenses for municipalities, industry and agricultural producers, and ensuring responsible long-term management of Alberta’s water resources, while respecting traditional uses and upholding environmental stewardship.
  • Asserting Alberta’s constitutionally protected authority in dealing with species at risk, including for caribou and sage grouse habitats.
  • Finalizing and publicly releasing a final accelerated strategy for oil sands mine water management and tailings pond reclamation.

“Premier has given me a clear mandate: deliver results, strengthen our economy and keep protecting the environment. Albertans want a common-sense approach to conservation and that is what we are delivering.”

Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas

Energy and Minerals

The Premier tasks Minister Jean with:

  • Implementing a roadmap to reach six million barrels per day of Alberta oil production by 2030 and eight million barrels per day by 2035.
  • Defending Alberta’s energy and other natural resource interests against federal overreach and developing strategic alliances with other provinces.
  • Securing approval for a new bitumen pipeline to the northwest coast of British Columbia and working to advance other pipeline projects and corridors to the United States, Ontario, Hudson Bay and the Arctic.
  • Developing an expedited 120-day provincial approval process for priority projects.
  • Continuing to facilitate and promote industry and provincial partnerships with Indigenous communities in the development and transport of Alberta’s natural resources, most especially in new pipeline infrastructure.

“I am delighted that Premier Danielle Smith has mandated me to chart a path to meet growing global demand for Alberta’s responsibly produced energy products. I will do this while modernizing other aspects of our energy and minerals industries and ensuring industry cleans up wells from generations of oil production without impacting the taxpayer. My commitment is to put Albertans first and make our energy and mineral industries the best in the world.”

Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals

Agriculture and Irrigation

The Premier tasks Minister Sigurdson with:

  • Developing legislation to put ‘Agriculture First’ and implementing regulatory changes to cut red tape and remove bureaucratic barriers, making the province’s agricultural products more competitive and increasing consumer choice by contributing to local and global food security.
  • Continuing to modernize and expand the province’s irrigation infrastructure to ensure farmers, ranchers, processors, communities and recreational users have access to the water they need.
  • Prioritizing long-term soil health and biodiversity, ensuring Alberta’s farmland remains productive for generations to come, while working to reduce fertilizer costs and improve availability by exploring innovative solutions and strategic partnerships.

“Alberta’s farmers, ranchers, and processors are the backbone of our province, and I am honoured to continue serving them. We’ve already seen record-breaking investment and job creation, and I’m excited to build on that momentum by cutting red tape, expanding market access, and strengthening food security so our agriculture sector remains strong and competitive for generations to come.”

RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

Indigenous Relations

The Premier tasks Minister Sawhney with:

  • Ensuring the treaties and constitutional rights of First Nations and Métis partners are respected and, in coordination with the Minister of Energy and Minerals and Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, proactively partnering with those communities to build oil and gas pipelines and other major development projects.
  • Continuing to expand opportunities for economic reconciliation and partnerships through the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation.
  • Continuing to co-lead the Alberta delegation to the federal-provincial working group to secure the approval for a bitumen pipeline to the west coast and the overturn or overhaul of all Trudeau-era anti-resource development laws damaging the Alberta economy.
  • To support nation-building efficiencies, advocating for the adoption of the Alberta government’s consultation approach by the federal government for nation-building projects that take place in the province.

“Strong relationships with Indigenous communities are the foundation of Alberta’s path forward. With this renewed mandate, I remain committed to continuing this important work on reconciliation, economic opportunity and community development. Indigenous equity in major projects drives investment, supports reconciliation, and builds long-term prosperity. Together, we’re shaping a stronger, more inclusive Alberta.”

Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Indigenous Relations
