Fort McKay First Nation Creates Room to Grow through Reserve Additions

Fort McKay First Nation is proud to announce the addition of eleven parcels of land to its reserve holdings following a multi-year process with the Federal Government. The parcels of land, totaling 114 acres, include land set aside for the Nation during the 2003 Treaty Land Entitlement process, as well as land located within the Fort McKay community. This addition of land allows Fort McKay First Nations more authority over its own territories and resources.

Expanding our reserve land through the ATR process is essential to our community’s oversight of our resources,” said FMFN Chief Mel Grandjamb. “It is a vital step in our sovereignty and commitment to providing community-based wellness services and building economic development for our members”. This acquisition of additional land for the Nation was made possible through a joint effort of the Fort McKay Group of Companies LP, Fort McKay Strategic Services Ltd., and Fort McKay First Nation.

The addition of the land is in line with Fort McKay First Nation’s goals to manage resources on its lands. Fort McKay First Nation is currently in development of a Land Code specific to its own reserve lands through the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management. The land code has been designed through a multi-year long committee process of Members of the Nation and legal experts, and it will be voted upon by Nation members later in 2022 for ratification.

Fort McKay First Nation believes that through land management and careful stewardship of its resources that the Nation will continue to create a vibrant and thriving community for generations to come. The Nation has already taken steps to provide for its members, with the building of the new Elsie Fabian K-9 school which is set to open this fall, as well as the construction of the Riverside Continuing Care Centre for Elders, which opened in 2018.
