N-D-P Leader Tom Mulcair says the reason there hasn’t been a national inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women is because there is a — quote — “underlying attitude of racism.”

He did not come right out and label the Harper government as racist during a speech in Saskatoon this morning.

Mulcair promised to repair the federal government’s relationship with indigenous women, and to call a national inquiry within his first 100 days in office. (11)

Stephen Harper is dodging questions about a possible recession, saying he won’t get into a discussion of economic technicalities.

Instead, in advance of tomorrow’s G-D-P report, Harper played up his government’s economic stewardship during a campaign appearance in Ottawa this morning.

Harper says the economic contraction is focused almost entirely in the oil and gas sector and that the real economic threat comes from his political opponents and their spending plans. (11)

Tomorrow morning’s report on second quarter G-D-P is expected to show that Canada slipped into a technical recession.

But two economists believe that an economic contraction will be short-lived.

T-D chief economist Beata Caranci expects the lower loonie will help the export sector and boost economic growth in the third quarter, while David Madani from Capital Economics also believes the struggling economy will return to positive growth in the second half of the year. (11)

A crowdfunding campaign to pay Ottawa’s part of a permanent road for a reserve that’s been under a boil-water advisory for 17 years fell well short of its 10-million dollar goal.

But organizers are vowing to keep fighting until the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation on the Ontario-Manitoba boundary gets justice.

The campaign raised 101-thousand dollars toward building a road for the reserve that was cut off from the mainland a century ago during construction of an aqueduct to send clean water to Winnipeg. (11)

Last-minute settlement talks between lawyers for N-F-L Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady have failed.

That means U-S Federal Judge Richard Berman will decide the fate of “Deflategate.”

Berman says both sides tried hard to reach a deal this morning but failed and that he expects to rule as early as tomorrow whether Brady must serve a four-game suspension for his role in using underinflated footballs in the playoffs last season. (11)

B-C residents will be the first in the country to earn Air Miles for getting off the couch.

Provincial Health Minister Terry Lake confirms B-C and the Public Health Agency of Canada will roll out a rewards program this fall that will let people rack up Air Miles if they demonstrate they are participating in activities that promote health living.

Lake says the program is going to be expanded across the country. (11)
