Edmonton Public Schools will develop a model to collect race-based data in an effort to dismantle systemic racism and racial discrimination, making it the first school jurisdiction in the province to commit to doing so.

Trustees voted unanimously during a board meeting on Tuesday to pass the recommendation to collect the race-based data with the intention to use it to identify and address gaps that exist in education for racialized communities. Edmonton public school board chairwoman Trisha Estabrooks said this is an ask she has heard from members of the community over the years.

“If we want to, as a school division, address some of the inequities that we know exist in our school, we need to get the data that shows that,” Estabooks said following the meeting.
