by ahnationtalk on November 16, 2015261 Views

Challenges facing First Nation peoples, particularly in regards to education issues, will be the topic at today’s (Fri. Nov. 13) meeting of Cochrane Ideas, starting at 7 p.m. in the downtown King Solomon Lodge on Centre Ave.

Guest speaker will be John Friesen, minister at the Morley United Church for almost three decades and an emeritus professor in the University of Calgary faculty of education where he taught for 48 years. He will be accompanied by his wife, Virginia Lyons Friesen, a former U of C sessional instructor.

The clash of values of traditional Indigenous beliefs and practices with modern Western society will be among issues raised. The impact of residential school education on Aboriginal people, and the functioning of First Nations bands are also expected to be on the agenda. Born near Duck Lake, Saskatchewan, John Friesen has maintained a lifelong interest in indigenous cultures. He’s studied at seven institutions of post-secondary education, and has written or co-written more than 50 books.
