December 10, 2024: International Human Rights Day
December 10, 2024
December 10 marks International Human Rights Day and the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by United Nations members on December 10, 1948. The Alberta Human Rights Commission is proud to uphold the principles of the UDHR, affirming the truth that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
Every person plays an important role in shaping a society where human rights are valued and reflected in our systems, policies, attitudes, and behaviours. The 2024 theme, “Our rights, our future, right now,” emphasizes the importance of addressing current human rights challenges while ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same human rights protections of today.
This theme is a call to action, urging governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to create just and inclusive societies by prioritizing human rights. From racial justice to gender equality, Indigenous rights, 2SLGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and religious rights, human rights are being undermined in unprecedented ways. The theme draws connections between today’s actions and tomorrow’s outcomes, stressing that present decisions will shape the freedoms and quality of life of generations to come.
This year’s theme is also about inspiring change and recognizing that each person has the right to shape their own future. It calls for the full realization of rights and freedoms, particularly for marginalized communities whose voices are too often overlooked.
In a world where the rights of many have been increasingly questioned, “Our rights, our future, right now” affirms that human rights are not just aspirations for the future, but obligations that must be fulfilled today, as we work towards a better tomorrow.
Here in Alberta, Human Rights Day serves as an important reminder to continue taking proactive steps to prevent and address discrimination. Each of us can contribute to building a province where human rights are valued and upheld and all Albertans can live lives of dignity.
The future of human rights depends on mutual respect, inclusion, and collective action to uphold the dignity and rights of all people. On Human Rights Day and every day, join communities across the globe in celebrating our collective rights and recognizing our shared responsibilities to create a future where everyone’s human rights are respected.
