County calls on Indigenous community to help design monument – Spruce Grove Examiner

As an act of reconciliation, Strathcona County will be creating a monument to honour the Indigenous peoples that first called the land home and the impacts of residential schools on the community.
“We’re looking at engaging with the Indigenous community in Strathcona County, in Treaty 6, in the Métis District 11, to get their feedback on what we should be doing,” said the county’s cultural services manager, Diane Yanch. “This is not something we can do on our own.”
Emphasizing collaboration with the Indigenous community, the county is working with the Indigenous owned and Edmonton-based public relations and engagement agency, pipikwan pêhtâkwan, to ensure the engagement is done in the correct manner, through “the visiting way.”
Still in the early stages of planning, Yanch said the project is beginning with a clean slate, welcoming all ideas.
