Commercial fishing, by a fair margin, is the biggest source of employment for the Abegweit First Nation in Prince Edward Island.
Chief Brian Francis, though, doesn’t want his band to rest on its laurels.
“Our fisheries are our biggest employer,’’ he says. “So it’s always one that we look to keep growing — and we are growing that one piece at a time.’’
Yet Francis is quick to note that the fortunes of his approximately 450-member Mi’kmaq band that lives on three geographically separate reserves has been improving on land as well as in the water.
