The backpacks will also carry essential school supplies and various vouchers
Amid the rising cost of living, the Calgary Police Youth Foundation is giving out 1,000 backpacks carrying school supplies and various vouchers to Indigenous and marginalized youth in Calgary.
Along with essential school items, the backpacks will contain snack items, books, a water bottle and Walmart and Subway gift cards. It’s all part of an initiative called the Pohkaisksinimaatstsoh’taksist Backpack Campaign.
“We know that the start of school is an important time, and we hope that these backpacks can help students have a successful start to the school year,” organizers of the initiative said in a statement.
The drive was scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre’s Exhibition Hall C in its North Building.
Supplies were unpacked and sorted between 1 and 3 p.m. with an elder blessing being given at the beginning of the event.
