EDMONTON – A moratorium in Quebec on new tobacco manufacturing has a company from that province looking at southern Alberta as the possible location for a cigarette manufacturing plant.
Four Winds Tobacco Products, which is registered on a Mohawk reserve in Quebec, sent representatives to a meeting of the Newell County council last month to inquire about a plant in Brooks, Alberta.
Tom O’Connell, a company consultant, says Four Winds wants to produce cigarettes for export and to wholesalers in Ontario.
There is no immediate plan to sell in Alberta, but he says Four Winds may eventually try to market cigarettes on First Nations in Western Canada.
O’Connell says if the company gets county approval it will apply for federal and provincial permits.
