EDMONTON — A First Nations chief says Alberta’s new climate change policy strengthens his hand in arguing for a greater role in planning energy development.

Grand Chief Steve Courtoreille of the Treaty 8 First Nations says he’s still waiting to hear what the plan means for his people.

The policy repeatedly emphasizes that aboriginals must play a prominent role in plans to combat climate change.

Courtoreille says that should translate into direct input into monitoring environmental change in the oilsands region.
