EDMONTON – New poll results suggest that Alberta’s oilsands may have some image-polishing to do even in their own backyard.
Data provided to The Canadian Press shows that 60 per cent of about 1,800 people surveyed believed the provincial government doesn’t enforce environmental rules on the industry very strictly.
About 70 per cent of respondents said the government should be tougher with enforcement.
The poll also suggested Albertans back conservation.
Some 95 per cent of respondents wanted oilsands companies to restore wetlands equal to the amount disturbed by their operations.
And two-thirds wanted to see more of the province’s boreal forest protected.
The poll was conducted for the Pembina Institute by Ekos Research and is considered accurate 19 times out of 20.
