Alberta spending $8 million for First Nations to research unmarked burial sites and undocumented deaths at residential schools – Wetaskiwin Times

First Nations communities will lead the way when it comes to researching undocumented deaths and burials at residential schools.

Last week, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Maskwacis-Wetaskiwin MLA and Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson announced the Provincial Government would provide $8 million in funding to support community-led research into the undocumented deaths and burials of children at Alberta’s residential schools.

“I’m not trying to impose myself on what they should do. They’re be in the driver’s seat on this one.”

The Alberta Residential Schools Community Research Grant is open to Indigenous communities and groups that will lead the research into the tragic legacy of Canada’s residential school program in Alberta.
