Alberta entrepreneurs Canada’s most active in starting up new businesses – Calgary Herald
June 18, 2015
A global report released Thursday says Albertans have a positive attitude toward entrepreneurship and the country’s highest level of involvement in early-stage businesses.
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, covering 73 countries and issued by the Calgary-based Centre for Innovation Studies, reported that 50 per cent of the Alberta population believe entrepreneurship is a good choice and 70 per cent say successful entrepreneurs enjoy respect.
Total early stage entrepreneurship — people actively preparing new ventures and those with businesses under three-and-a-half years old — is just over 18 per cent. The national rate is 13 per cent.
“Alberta has a rate comparable with the most active jurisdictions anywhere,” said the report. “Overwhelmingly, the entrepreneurs are motivated by perception of an opportunity.”
