A Step Toward Reconciliation through Resiliency: Alberta Students Meet to Share in Lessons Learned from Indigenous Teachings

KANANASKIS, AB, Jan. 22, 2016 – Three hundred and seventy participants, with student representation from 25 Alberta and B.C. schools gather on Stoney/Nakoda traditional territory on January 27th to discover how lessons from Indigenous teachings can contribute to a healthy school community.

Students, teachers and health professionals will explore Resilience as a Path to Healthy School Communities under the guidance of Indigenous scholar Dr. Martin Brokenleg. Participants are part of the movement to inspire wellness as a priority in schools, recognizing that healthy students are better learners.

What you’ll see during the workshop:

• Two hundred and fifty students engaging in Traditional Games outdoors in a mountain setting, making fire bannock and learning from one another.
• Aboriginal youth speaking about the impact of mentorship in their lived experience.
• Strengths-based approaches to supporting First Nations health in Alberta school communities.

The workshop is hosted by Ever Active Schools in conjunction with the 7^th annual school health conference, Shaping the Future. Ever Active Schools is a government of Alberta cross-ministerial initiative that assists schools in creating and sustaining healthy, active school communities.
