The Calgary Stampede is a not-for-profit community organization that preserves and celebrates western heritage, culture, and community spirit. Supported by over 2,500 passionate volunteers, the Stampede’s year-round events, programs and initiatives invest in youth, support agricultural programs, celebrate western culture, and make a lasting economic impact for the city of Calgary. Each year, Stampede Park hosts more than 1,200 business, tourism, sporting, hospitality, and community events and welcomes more than four million guests. These events create thousands of jobs and contribute more than $540M to the Alberta economy. With a vision to create a world-class, year-round gathering place for the community, the Calgary Stampede is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 20 directors elected by shareholders and up to 12 community appointees. Day-to-day operations are carried out by more than 1,200 year-round employees working in partnership with the 2,500 volunteers, all led by the Chief Executive Officer.
The Calgary Stampede is a complex and diverse organization with many interconnected business focuses that include the iconic annual Calgary Stampede festival, a year-round convention centre, a year-round youth campus and multiple youth education programs, two working ranches with year-round international stock contracting activities, year-round agricultural programming, a casino, a registered charity, and an entertainment agency. The Stampede’s BMO Centre convention facility is currently undergoing a $500M expansion that will transform the city of Calgary into a tier one convention city.
The CS brand has been a well-known community symbol for over a century. While it stands for Calgary Stampede, it has also come to symbolize Community Spirit and the belief that We’re Greatest Together. The Calgary Stampede’s core values of western hospitality, integrity, pride of place, and commitment to the community are brought to life throughout the year as its gathering place hosts, educates, and entertains a global audience.
The Calgary Stampede is now searching for its next Chief Executive Officer to build on the foundation laid by the organization’s leadership over the last 108 years. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is accountable to the Board of Directors and provides overall leadership to the Calgary Stampede. The CEO works closely with the Board to set strategic direction and to develop and implement strategic and business goals to allow the Calgary Stampede to fulfill its vision to create a world-class, year-round gathering place in the heart of the great city of Calgary.
The CEO is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships of trust and influence with stakeholders, government, surrounding communities, and patrons of the Stampede. The CEO builds partnerships and linkages that bring people and organizations together and promotes the Stampede as a recognizable spokesperson throughout the larger Calgary community. The CEO will need to promote the Stampede and leverage networks and connections in order to communicate the breadth of the Stampede’s impact on the community.
As CEO, you must understand the value of the Stampede’s history and be able to leverage that brand in the community. You will be charismatic and engaging with exceptional communication skills, and bring the proven ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders. As a visionary and respected leader in the community, you will empower and leverage people throughout the organization to set the strategic direction of the organization and fulfill its vision.
