Come join us at MacEwan University-The Lookout (SA – 200) for an enlightening discussion on Indigenous research. Our panel of experts will share their insights, experiences, and knowledge on this important topic.

Dr Shawn Wilson (he/him) is from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in northern Canada and lives on Syilx territory in Kelowna, British Columbia. He is an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies and coordinates the Indigenous Knowledges Theme at the University of British Columbia.

Shawn has worked with Indigenous people worldwide and co-leads a research project aiming to define rules and guidelines for respecting and safeguarding sacred teachings, such as Ceremonial and Star Knowledge. He has spent time living, teaching and researching across Canada, the US, Australia, and Norway, along with supervising research projects in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Shawn is the author of Research is Ceremony, which has sold out multiple printings. He is on the Board of Directors with the Tapestry Institute and has joined the newly established advisory group at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Shawn has presented at Goals House (Davos) as part of the World Economic Forum and the MIR Centre for Peace. His cites his 3 kids as his greatest achievement, pride and joy.

Dr. Rebecca Sockebeson (she/her) is a Professor with the Department of Educational Policy Studies in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. ( In trasition with University of Alberta & University of Maine).

Dr Sockebeson is of the Penobscot Indian Nation, the Waponahki Confederacy of tribes located in Indian Island, Maine, United States and the Maritime provinces of Canada. She is the 8th child of the Elizabeth Sockbeson clan, the auntie of over 100 Waponahki & Stoney Sioux youth, and the mother of three children who are also of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation of Alberta. She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University and a PhD in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Alberta. Rebecca is an activist and scholar, specializing in Indigenous Peoples Education. Her research focuses on Indigenous knowledge and knowldge mobilization (also the topic of her current SSHRC insight grant). Aboriginal healing through language and culture, anit-racism and decolonization.

In 2013, she received, together with her Indigenous colleagues, the University of Alberta Human Rights Teaching Award for her role in coordinating and teaching Alberta’s first compulsory course in Aboriginal Education.understanding of Indigenous research.
