Don’t miss this interesting and informative lunch and learn with presentations from two esteemed experts.

Presentation 1: “Pipe Monitoring for Landslides” – Mr. Doug Dewar

Bio: Mr. Doug Dewar is currently the Senior Staff Engineer at Pembina Pipelines working with a team of internal professionals and consultants to implement a geohazard management program for approximately 19,000 km of pipelines in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and the plains of the U.S.A. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor’s of Science in Geological engineering and the University of Alberta with a Master’s of Science in Geotechnical Engineering. Doug initially worked in consulting for 7 years focusing on landslides and terrain stability for the forest, mining, and pipeline industries before transitioning to working for pipeline operators for the last 20 years. His focus is incorporating inline inspection data in geohazard management programs.

Presentation 2: “Managing creeping landslide hazards through consequence-based decision making in high reliability organizations” – Dr. Jim Oswell

Bio: Dr. Oswell has extensive experience in providing geotechnical input to soil-pipeline interaction analyses and geological hazard assessments for pipelines. He is an expert in geotechnical aspects of pipelines in permafrost terrain and provided specialist permafrost engineering for pipeline projects including Mackenzie Gas Project (Canada), Norman Wells oil pipeline (Canada), Alaska North Slope Project (United States), Denali Pipeline Project (United States, Canada), Alaska Gas Project (United States, Canada), Alaska LNG Project (United States), Baydaratskaya Bay Gas Pipeline Crossing (Russia) and the ExxonNeftigaz Sakhalin to DeKastri oil pipeline (Russia). He has also provided senior engineering review for management of geohazards on the Sabah–Sarawak Gas Pipeline (east Malaysia).

Dr. Oswell is also an external geotechnical engineering review expert supporting forensic investigations in pipeline failures due to landslides and other geological hazards. These projects are in Canada, United States, Ecuador, and Malaysia. He has provided expert testimony in law courts, public hearings, and regulatory hearings.

Dr. Oswell has authored or co-authored over 40 conference or peer-reviewed journal papers. In 2021 the second edition of this textbook entitled “Soil mechanics for pipeline stress analysis” was published. This textbook provides key information to mechanical and pipeline engineers dealing with geotechnical data. He teaches a short course on the same subject and has presented this workshop to audiences in Calgary, Edmonton, Houston, Innsbruck, Seoul, and Beijing, Lima, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Kuala Lumpur. In 2019, he published two chapters in the second edition of Pipeline Geo-Environmental Design and Geohazard Management.

Jim is a former Associate Editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal and a current member of the ISO Technical Committee (TC) 67/SC 2 – Pipeline transportation systems; Member of Working Group (WG) 22 – Geological hazards risk management of oil and gas pipelines.
