Source of Truth: Indigenous Leaders Gathered at Banff for Dialogue – Calgary Herald

Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain is the name ceremonially granted in 2017 to the small mountain in the Banff townsite. Its previous name recalled a surveyor’s mistaken decision to put a tunnel through the small hill.

Bill Snow, a Stoney from Morley, was at the Banff Centre recently, which hosted the first Indigenous Leaders’ Dialogue last weekend as part of the annual Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. He helped choose the more appropriate name, and hopes Alberta and Ottawa will accept it soon.

The Centre has included Indigenous programming since the 1990s and in 2004 it appointed educator Robert Breaker as its first Aboriginal board member.

This year’s Banff Book and Film Festival included two 90-minute leaders’ dialogues. Several hundred people listened, asked questions and learned.

Indigenous leaders from North America and New Zealand shared wisdom that was by turn humorous, insightful and poignant.
