Renewed focus on Alberta’s child intervention system in wake of MMIW report – Edmonton Journal

Alberta faces a slew of new recommendations to overhaul its troubled child welfare system on the heels of the final report by the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

The document released Monday outlined 231 calls to action relevant for all levels of government across the country, on issues ranging from health care to justice.

But for Alberta, the changes slated for child intervention services follow a provincial panel that wrapped up its work in March 2018.

“The child intervention system clearly needs monumental change,” said the inquiry’s legal counsel Christa Big Canoe in an interview Wednesday. “We’re apprehending children … it’s still not even because of abuse of children, it’s neglect and poverty.
