New Central Library to share breadth of Indigenous culture through public art – Thestar.com

CALGARY—When the New Central Library opens its doors later this year, Indigenous stories will have a permanent space.

The Calgary Public Library is launching an Indigenous public art plan to help tell the diverse history and culture of the Treaty 7 and Métis Region 3 nations.

The plan is to select Indigenous artists who will create works that act as educational and storytelling pieces for three permanent installations that will live at the library.

Teneya Gwin, who is working with the library as the Indigenous design lead, said growing up as an Indigenous person in an urban setting, she didn’t see her culture reflected in public spaces.

“Where the New Central Library building is placed, it’s very significant in Indigenous cultures,” Gwin said. “So having that storyline through art is significant, and I think it’s a great step for the City of Calgary.”
