March 23, 2017 – Lethbridge College is pleased to announce the continuation of its partnership with Saamis Aboriginal Employment and Training Association and their partners to support a Powerline Technician program intake specifically for the Aboriginal community.

In addition to the powerline technician training, this unique program includes essential skills training that will increase the success of participants in the program and their employability as powerline technicians after they complete it. This opportunity is made possible by funding from Alberta Labour, Community Futures Treaty Seven and Rupertsland Institute Métis Centre of Excellence.

“We have an excellent relationship with Saamis and are looking forward to the opportunity to deliver this program for a second time,” says John Jacobson, director of Corporate and Continuing Education at Lethbridge College. “Lethbridge College has worked closely with the powerline industry to develop this program and employers in the industry recognize the quality and depth of the hands-on skill development that the students receive.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Aboriginal people in Lethbridge and area to take part in the Powerline Technician program,” says Anita Neefs, executive director of Saamis. “This industry-supported partnership had a tremendous result last year and is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to get into a high-demand career. We’re very excited about this program and looking forward to getting started.”

Powerline technician is an in-demand career because the industry is facing a high retirement rate over the next five years.

“This is a great opportunity for our clients,” says Shay Yellow Horn, Community Futures Treaty Seven, Labour Market Consultant. “We’re excited to work alongside our partners and industry in this exciting partnership.”

Lethbridge College’s Powerline Technician/Power System Electrician program is specifically designed to enhance career opportunities in the utility electrical field. Participants receive extensive hands-on and theoretical training related to overhead and underground distribution installation, making students attractive to potential employers.

Recruitment for the program is currently underway. Interested First Nations in the Lethbridge area and Métis in Alberta are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications and assessment is April 1.

The program will begin April 17 and conclude in August 2017.
