RED DEER, ALTA. — Fifty Indigenous apprentices from remote Alberta have become certified welders through a new program at Red Deer College.

The Flexibility and Innovation in Apprenticeship Technical Training (FIATT) program is a federally-funded $1.4-million initiative where participants received in-class training as well as workplace experience, and gave apprentices access to a new simulation tool that reduced time spent away from workplaces.

Overall, the federal government is investing $11 million in the FIATT project, with a total of 11 projects approved. The pilot funds third-party organizations to test innovative approaches that increase completion rates and improve access to apprenticeship training.
