Enoch Cree Nation withdraws support for proposed Epcor solar farm – Calgary Sun

A First Nation has withdrawn support for Epcor’s contentious solar farm, saying new archeological information suggests the site was used for ceremonial purposes.

The proposal for a 23-hectare solar farm beside Epcor’s water treatment plant in the North Saskatchewan River valley on the city’s west end goes to a public hearing Monday. The project also faces stiff opposition from river valley conservationists.

Enoch Cree Nation initially supported the Epcor solar farm project and, in a letter dated Feb. 20, stated that it was “satisfied with the thought that has gone into the protection and vegetation restoration of the project area.” However, after archeological work was completed on the proposed site uncovered what Enoch Cree believes is “significant” evidence that ceremonies were conducted, the nation has decided to withdraw its support.
