CNRL facing Métis challenge over Gregoire Lake plans – Fort McMurray Today

Canadian Natural Resources is asking the province for permission to explore the area surrounding Gregoire Lake for bitumen deposits.
However, the area CNRL wants to explore is close to the boundaries of land the municipality hopes to develop, and within territory the McMurray Métis argue is culturally significant.
The Calgary-based energy company filed the application in September, and if approved, would allow CNRL to drill at seven different locations in townships surrounding Gregoire Lake Provincial Park near Anzac. The application is being reviewed by the Alberta Energy Regulator.
But in a statement of concern filed in October, the McMurray Métis Local 1935 argue CNRL is not only avoiding consultation, but future projects in the area will hurt traditional hunting and trapping.
